Anthony Barry Explains The Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, Barry featured in League Two. Today, his attention is fixed on helping the England manager win the World Cup next summer. The road from athlete to trainer began as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He realized his calling.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression has been remarkable. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he built a standing with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams led him to elite sides, plus he took on international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the top as he describes it.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a structured plan enabling us to have the best chance.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Dedication, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour all the time, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their methods feature player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. He stresses “Team England” and avoids language such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he states. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and that's our focus many of our days on. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of the trends and to lead and set new standards. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.

“There are 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We need to execute a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly during that time. It's about moving it from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive during the limited time, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. We have to spend time communicating regularly, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy must reflect everything that is good of English football,” Barry says. “The physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the work ethic. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.

“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a system that lets them to play freely like they do every week, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“There are emotional wins for managers in attack and defense – building from the defense, pressing from the front. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

Barry’s hunger for improvement knows no bounds. While training for his pro license, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class included stars like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he entered tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard included convinced and he hired Barry as part of his backroom with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.

His replacement with the club took over, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out of Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
