Music Legend Barry Manilow Scheduled for Surgery for Cancer in His Lung.

Barry Manilow announced that he was diagnosed with cancer of the lung and is set to have a surgical procedure.

Spot Found in Initial Phase

The legendary 82-year-old artist, whose parade of high-spirited hits from "I Write the Songs" established him as one of pop music’s enduringly popular performers, will have an operation to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to fight off the illness, which is at an early phase.

“As my fans are aware, I recently suffered from six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a relapse of another five weeks.

“Despite the fact that I was past the infection and returned to the spotlight for my residency, my excellent physician ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK.

“The MRI discovered a malignant lesion on my left side that requires removed. It’s incredible chance (and a skilled doctor) that it was found so early.”

Rescheduled Shows

He has postponed a string of planned concerts, but indicated he would be back on stage by mid-February for his enduring concert series at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino.

He went on to say: “The doctors do not believe it has traveled and I’m taking tests to confirm their diagnosis. So, that’s it. No chemo. Radiation therapy is off the table. Just home remedies and classic TV.

“I’m counting the days until I return to my familiar venue in Las Vegas for our February love-themed shows.”

A Long Career and Personal Life

Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a concert series at the Westgate Las Vegas. The singer has spent decades in the public eye and revealed he is gay in 2017, after marrying his longtime partner and manager in secret in 2014.

The pair were in a private relationship for in excess of 35 years. Last year, Manilow spoke about how important his husband had been to him during his explosion in popularity in the 1970s.

“When my fame skyrocketed, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, coming home to an lonesome hotel suite, you can find yourself in a lot of difficulty if you, you know, you’re on your own evening after evening,” he said.

“But I found my partner right around when it was taking off. And I no longer had to go back to those isolated suites. I had somebody to be vulnerable with or to share joys with.

“I hope that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those rooms by themselves, because you might succumb to pitfalls. I never did. But it was very solitary until I met Garry. And then it was fun.”
