Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Shortly After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Announced

There are "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has declared.

Last Thursday the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest in the coming fortnight to address the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a meeting was not "required".

The administration withheld additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with insiders suggesting the president had urged him to relinquish extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Russia.

Yet, on Monday the American president embraced a truce plan supported by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the war on the current front line.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against pausing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, Lavrov said, using Moscow's terminology for a series of extensive requirements that include the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky stated conversations concerning the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday occurred before rumors that the US was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in international relations", he remarked.
