The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, disclosed how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of a personal collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders versus Corporate Owner
The recent development escalates the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted that the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, which match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Future Plans
The founder stated how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades of involvement, citing concerns regarding how its independence had been undermined following Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
