TikTok Content Creators Driving Parallel Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are urged to contact these accounts directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and claims of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in users administering products of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.

Service Response and Material Removal

Based on TikTok, the service has taken down problematic material and banned associated hashtags and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Operations

Investigations also discovered groups with up to nine thousand members selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at home.

After minutes of entering one group, a vendor shared contact information, where most purchases occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Item Details and Costs

Within these groups, posts display black plastic packages with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between powder vials, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly moderated dangerous content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to recent price rises for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has already seen patients harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet approved … may subject users to potentially significant health risks”.
