What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
