An Unprecedented Mayor

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
